Turin - Beuil
The Guide book: From Col de Turini descend beautiful switchbacks.
The start was fantastic - descending the Col De Turin. 15kms descending sweeping corners with 10 hairpins thrown in just to keep it interesting. Big smiles at the bottom.
A gentle climb to Saint-Martin-de-Vésubie (12kms)
Phil and Al are feeling it and when Agnes pulls in beside Al stops and gets immediately into the car (an all night sickness bought on by heat exhaustion) Phil suffered all night as well and was throwing up. He toughs it out and hangs with us through most of the rest of the day.
The climb up to the Col de Saint Martin / la Colmiane (1 604 m) sits between the Tinée and Vésubie valleys near the town of la Colmiane (1500m) This is our lunch stop (with al sleeping on a mat upstairs) Another fantastic decent and the day is warming up.
At the bottom we begin the second last climb of the day and temp soars as we climb and sits between 36 and 42 degrees - that is right 42 degrees consistently Phil is really suffering now and at the LLonse water fountain trough is a lifesaver for all. Simon and Phil climb completely in up to their necks. It helps a lot but even then it is not enough and we coax Phil over col de Sine knowing that we can get Agnes to pick him up at the bottom of the Gorge Cians.
From LLonse we are climbing on a real backcountry road — the wind is blowing HOT HOT HOT This road got tar twenty years and not since and the road is quite broken, but from Col de Sine the road is better. More water at Pierlas helps and the descent from there is covered in shattered shards of red rock that has fallen of the sides. We descend carefully but still with speed, and Agnes is sitting at the bottom to pick phil up (reluctantly) This decent is through a open oven with fan forced wind blowing over us.
At the bottom of a endless descent on tiny swticbacks and narrow tar roads we turn right and ascend the Gorges Sup du Ciane to Beuil steep to start with 12 degrees abut it flattens to 8 degrees. Fantastic scenery - red gorge, blue water and cooler temp. The tunnels are even colder so that is great and it is only 12kms to Beuil
The fine - carrying the silly frog - Simon for dragging on a wing mirror to bring himself back up to the peleton.
The details 94.3km 5:33:28 2,810m of climbing
