After a beautiful breakfast with Jacques and Lxxxxx, we had a leisurely start heading to Col de Scala. This was a steady climb through stunning alpine meadows, and after 45 minutes we reached the high point. A few kilometres further down the road we stopped with a perfect outlook over Italy.
From here we headed back to Briancon on our way to Col de Lautarent, a 28km climb. Today Simon was the unlucky team member not feeling well and finally coincided that the car was the best option for the rest of the day and quickly fell asleep.
After a quick drinks stop we commenced the final 8km push to the infamous Col du Galibier which has featured 53 times in the Tour de France. The pack was led by Geoff but quickly Wayne and Phil made their way to the front, with Phil having the legs to bag another Col having taunted Wayne close to the top. Not long after Geoff Dave and Alastair summited having held a steady pace throughout the climb.
Following the obligatory pictures, a long flowing and at times fast descent awaited as we rode to St Michael and our home for the night. Unfortunately the descent was not without incident, as riders hit the deck as Alastair failed to notice a hard breaking bus up front and ran into the back of Phil. Likely the damage was limited to only two flat tires, a couple of cuts and a bruised ego. All riders quickly re-gathered their composure and after changing tires/wheels were back on the road all be it a little more cautious.
Today’s stats: 108km, Elevation gain: 1983m, Fast speed: 64kmph, Average Temp: 25. Average Speed: 20.4km
