On return from Europe and 16 days hard riding it has been ski racing season full on.
In amongst organising and running the 22nd year of the Peak to Peak
It goes like this
Return Sat
Mon 8-9am Long skis at Dawn (LADS) GS Skis on the M1 running at over 100kms hr
Top speeds around 120kms
Tuesday 8-9am Same with Winter Classic thrown in as well. 1st Masters.
Weds 8-9am Same
Thusrday PtP organising
Friday 31st pm Downhill on Coronet Peak
Speed suits on so probably about 125kms hr
Time for M1 is 1.02.23 8th= on raw time / 2nd in class
(exact same time as Mike Unger who pushes me down to 4th on Handicap - he is three months
older)
am Slalom 4th on Raw time / 2nd on handicap and 2nd in class to Bob Davis - USA)
Super Combined - 1st run slalom and Downhill times
4th on raw time / 2nd on handicap / 2nd in class
Saturday 22nd year of Peak to Peak
Weds to Hutt
Thurs Super G training
Friday am Super G 1.02.59 7th / 3rd on handicap / 2nd in class
(1 / hundred of a sec different to Mike Unger 1.02.58- so after 2 mins and 5 secs of
racing Mike and I are operated by 1/100 of a sec - that is close racing)
pm Slalom 3rd on Raw Time / 2nd on handicap and 2nd in class
Super Combined 3rd / 2nd on handicap / 2nd in class (Bob Davis again)
Snowed lots - 43cms on the hill and probably 15 cms downtown Metven so a late start with the big left opening only at 1.40 - but cranked in about 10 runs - the avalanched debris was the best under the towers,. Big wind waves over the rest of the mountain. Interesting on little slalom skis.
“If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough.” - Mario Andretti
It worked for me on sunday
Sunday am GS on a powder base made for a very rough first run with big potholes (even though I was only racing bib 22. But must have had a good one as I need up with fastest time. Had to slip the course after reset and the threatening story arrived with snow and foggy conditions for second run. No one could see anything. But somehow I struggled down the course 6 secs faster than anyone else (6 secs - it’s quite unbelievable really but there you go - I’ll take it)
So the cup represents the overall fastest time for the Masters GS at Hutt.
So GS 1st overall / 1st in class and 1st on handicap.
Not a bad 10 days of racing
